We've started using Pixlr Editor this past week. It is an app that is part of the Google Drive family and is free to use through the Drive. We spent most of the first class learning how to use all the tools and features of the app and played around with some images. Learning a new program can be both exciting and frustrating. I definitely brushed up on some of the FAQs videos to make sure I was using the app to the best of my abilities. It is amazing how quiet blocks can get when students are actively engaged and working with something new and challenging.
Students will be completing their Colour Splash assignment this week and will also be sending me the link to their Weebly sites so that I can see how everything is coming along. I want to make sure that students are on track and keeping up with their weekly assignments so that I can provide them with feedback to improve their sites. It is amazing that we're already heading into Thanksgiving weekend. I only have 11 more classes with my IT8s! We have another Pixlr assignments and I still want to show them how Garageband and iMovie works so time will certainly fly! Our rotation time together will be over before we know it. Another one bites the dustWe are well underway in our IT8 classes, spending most of our time this week working with Prezi and Powerpoint. I learned that google docs have limitations when trying to share information with students. After a little bit of a hiccup, I was able to get the templates sorted out enough so that students had a base to start from when creating infographics about the Dos and Don'ts of Social Media.
I spent time this week working on my gamification of my Foods 9 course. With the help of ClassDojo, my students will be working together each class to earn experience points towards a grand total for each block. At the end of each month, the class that has accumulated the most points will earn themselves a bonus activity. I'm still brainstorming and polling students to see what they want to do as an enrichment activity. I finally got around to registering for the cueBC conference and am looking forward to attending. Last year I was inspired by the keynote speaker, George Couros, and I can't wait to see what I might be able to use next. We survived our first full weekI am happy to report that our first full week of school is almost under wraps. One focus I have this year is to establish clear routines and expectations in all of my classes so that students know what is expected as soon as they walk through the door.
I spent a little time reading a book I borrowed from a friend, The First Days of School by Harry K. Wong & Rosemary T. Wong, to get myself into the swing of things. There is a lot of information in the text but I think it will prove to be useful over the course of the year. My first couple of I.T. 8 classes were a little touch and go since the PCs aren't set up exactly how I want them yet. I'm also a Mac user so I'm finding that I will need to relearn and adjust a couple of things. Lesson of the week that I learned with my 8s is that Internet Explorer is not our friend... an important lesson to learn! Since my 8s are expected to write a blog post weekly, I'm challenging myself to do the same. I guess we'll see how that goes. Until next time, KT |
